Plans to reverse the destruction of 'elitist' sixth forms, brought in during the 1970s during the drive to comprehensive education were announced yesterday, by Education Secretary John Patten the Daily Telegraph reports (p5).

The paper says that for the first time in 30 years shcools without sixth forms are to be encouraged to apply for permission to teach A-levels and their vocational equivalents to 16 and 18 year olds.
