Council pension funds outperformed stock market indices in the year to 31 March, averaging returns of 13.6%.

According to investment performance consultancy The WM Company, council fund performance was dominated by overseas equity returns - 38.4% compared with an index return of 26.5%. UK equity performance was 10.2%, higher than the index return of 9.9%.

WM executive director Peter Warrington said: 'After a period of underperformance in recent years it was good to see many active fund managers outperform the FTSE All Share Index.

'This outperformance has not stopped the flow of money into index-tracking funds, but it has slowed it down. Approximately 10% of all local authority pension fund UK equity assets are now managed on this basis.'
