Today's announcement that only 45% of local authority legal services will be subject to CCT has been welcomed by the AMA.

AMA secretary, Rodney Brooke said: 'Clearly the Department of Environment has listened to the arguments put forward by the Associations and their advisers.'

However Mr Brooke warned the percentage was still too high: 'The trouble is that privatising legal services has been treated as a technical issue, not whether it is practical or desirable. The AMA does not believe that you can treat legal services as just another commodity to be traded on the market.'
