Local politicians in Perth have reacted angrily to an announcement by United Distillers that it is pulling out of the town, according to the Financial Times (p10).

The company's withdrawal results from a December merger between Guinness and Grand Metropolitan to form a parent group. Local business and civic leaders fear the same could happen with the locally based General Accident.

'Decentralising the decision making to London gives me concern for the future. It worries me that we've lost the centre of power,' said Pert and Kinross council chief executive Harry Robertson of the General Accident decision to move it's head office in London.
