The Wales Tourist Board has announced the resignation of its chief executive John French. Commenting on the resignation, Welsh Office minister Peter Hain said:

'It is important that the uncertainty surrounding Mr French's position has now been resolved after a difficult year exacerbated by the bad weather and high pound.

'The Rugby World Cup Tournament next year and run-up to the new Millennium provide great opportunities for the industry in Wales and it is equally important that the new chief executive is in place as quickly as possible.

'The board has imaginative plans to maximise the benefits that flow from these events, and help the industry in Wales. Wales has great potential for tourism and we are determined to succeed,' said Mr Hain.
