Bedford BC residents have voted in favour of a directly elected mayor, making it the eighth council to do so, and the first to hold a poll triggered by a public petition.

The majority was high with 67% in favour of a mayor and just 33% against. However, the turnout was only 15.5%, one of the lowest yet in a mayoral referendum. The election is scheduled for 17 October.

Already, two potential candidates have put themselves forward. Labour group deputy leader Apu Bagchi is seeking the Labour nomination. Businessman Charles Rose is seeking the Tory nomination.

New Local Government Network mayoral campaigns manager Anna Randle said other areas might be encouraged to petition following the success in Bedford.
