Private finance initiative projects worth more than£2 billion have been signed since Labour came to power in May last year.

Paymaster general Geoffrey Robinson told MPs that, as of last month, 40 deals had been signed under the auspices of 13 different government departments and agencies.

The biggest PFI project given backing by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions is a£33 million Kirklees MBC waste management deal.

This is closely followed by a£29m Surrey CC residential homes deal.

But these are dwarfed by, for example, a£350m prime estate project for the social security department and a£214m Norfolk and Norwich hospital deal.
