A pharmacist from Dulwich, south London, has launched his campaign to be an independent mayor of London, reports The South London Press (p15).

Ashwinkumar Tanna has sold his business and is ploughing£20,000 in his bid to beat his heavyweight opponents for the post.

He said: 'If you look at what a fiasco we have seen recently in relation to Lord Archer being selected by his party and the same thing with the Labour Party with Ken Livingstone, it is about time that the people realised one thing, that it doesn't matter what someone says - if they choose a candidate of a political party they are just going to support the party line.

'The only people I have to answer to are my wife and two children.' His manifesto demands that shoppers be allowed to park on yellow lines and red routes for 30 minutes, that trains run more frequently and on time, a fares freeze, that drinking hours be extended, special constables to be brought on to the street to improve safety, and for policemen to be paid more.

He also plans to revamp the system of business rates linking them to profits as well as property value.
