Stoke City Council is trying to discourage residents from feeding pigeons, reports The Times (p8).

Malcolm Hawksworth, centre manager at the council, said: 'We have used local radio, television and the press to get over the message that pigeons are airborne rats, that they carry more disease than rats.

'The public now have a devalued view of Percy the pigeon and that feeding pigeons is a very unhealthy thing to do.'

One popular method of removing the pigeons is to play loud music or introduce a bird of prey. Mr Hawksworth added: 'It is like putting a bomb up their backsides.'

Wandsworth LBC has also issued an injunction against 24 people caught feeding pigeons regularly on closed circuit television cameras.
