The Labour Party has called for local authorities to be compensated when they suffer financial loss because their objections to out of town shopping centres are overruled, the FT reports.

Keith Vaz, the party's environment spokesman called on John Gummer to authorise higher regeneration grants for areas whose once thriving high streets have been decimated.

Mr Vaz said a survey showed that, since 1989, 290 out of town developments opposed by local authorities had been allowed on appeal by the environment secretary, the paper reports.
