James Caird, head of planning and building control at South Shropshire DC has become the second president of the Planning Officers Society.

James Caird took over from Graeme Bell, former county planning officer of Lancashire, at the society's first annual general meeting recently.

The society was formed from the former District Planning Officers Society, Metropolitan Planning Officers Society and County Planning Officer Society in April 1997. It represents the chief planning officers of all local authorities in the country.

The wide range of local authorities in the country is epitomised by the two president's authorities, Lancashire being one of the largest and South Shropshire being one of the smallest.

In assuming the presidency Mr Caird pledged that the society would build on the success of its first year and continue to seek to become an effective and well respected organisation, promoting planning in local government.
