More than 8,000 people have used Wandsworth planners' Internet service since it went live in January, The Times reports (Interface, p5).

Interested parties can use the net to apply for planning permission, see what plans have been submitted and comment upon them.

Borough planner Ian Thompson said: 'The public has not always found it easy to know what plans have been submitted. Anyone could come into the planning department, but we were only open nine to five, Monday to Friday.

'As our new scanners let us scan drawings into our computer system, we realised we could make these available to anyone over the net'.
