The government?s deadline for comments on airport expansion plans in the south-east has been greeted with a wave of protest from councils that could be affected.

Councillors at Wandsworth LBC said there would be an increase in congestion and noise pollution if Heathrow was expanded, while Richmond upon Thames LBC leader Tony Arbour (Con) said: ?If a new runway is needed, the government must find an alternative location. Heathrow is clearly the wrong choice.?

Meanwhile, Surrey CC was quick to attack proposals to expand Gatwick airport by two more runways. Councillors claimed the plans contravene a legal agreement banning construction of any new runways for the next 15 years.

The Department of Transport has received around 140,000 responses to the consultation and officials are now collating the evidence.

It seems likely a new airport in Cliffe in Kent will be ruled out amid fears for local wildlife, although a spokesman for the Department of Transport was keen to stress no decisions have been made.
