Plymouth's housing stock is in a state of crisis, the city's housing committee chairman has said, the Plymouth Evening Herald reports.

The paper quotes Pat Kelly as saying: 'We have a crisis on our hands and there is no light at the end of the tunnel.'

He said that £80m needs to be spent on 4,000 pre-war council homes, but that the city has only £4.5m available.

The paper quotes Mr Kelly as saying: ' The situation is getting worse every year, and great swathes of our city are heading toward slumland. We aren't looking for a grant, just for permission to borrow the money on the open market as a private house owner would do.'
