The prime minister has agreed to provide extra cash to provide more police on the beat across Oxfordshire, reports BBC Thames Valley FM.

Homes secretary Michael Howard has told the regional station that John Major has approved the move.

Two months ago Thames Valley police chief constable Charles Pollard said he wanted to have more officers on foot patrol but that resources were at an all-time low for the force.

Mr Howard, on the political campaign trail in Bicester, said Mr Pollard would get the extra officers he wants.

He told Thames Valley FM: 'I think the chief constable intends to employ an extra 136 officers during the coming year so that will be an extra 136 officers for Thames Valley'.
