The North Yorkshire, Humberside, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire police forces are backing a call from the Association of Chief Police Officers for constabularies to recoup the money raised from speed-camera fines.

The Yorkshire Post (11 Dec, p7) reported that ACPO was responding to a parliamentary debate, following an announcement that some government departments will be allowed to keep the money they collect in fines and fees.

Supt Graham Di Duca, head of Humberside's traffic branch, said: 'One in three accidents is caused by speed. Increasing the capacity to enforce the speed limit would have a dramatic effect on the number of collisions. We would welcome the opportunity to increase, by whatever means, the capacity for speed enforcement.'
