Police are to investigate claims by residents of boys homes in Cheshire and Merseyside that they were sexually abused by social workers, the Independent reports (p3).

The paper says three homes in Cheshire and two homes in Merseyside are involved in the inquiry, which had been kept under wraps until it was exposed by a BBC regional television report yesterday.
