Thames Valley Police Authority is to allow police to raise money through sponsorship, after a £7 million cut in its budget.

Inspector Martin Elliott said the force was looking for sponsors for various community projects after Thames Valley gave the scheme the go-ahead.

'Policing isn't just about what we can do, it's about what the community can do, and it's very expensive,' he said.

Funds are being sought particularly keenly in Reading for a Neighbourhood Watch initiative called 'Ringmaster', which allows automatic connection to all co-ordinators.

Elsewhere in the country, police cars in Whitney, Oxfordshire have been sponsored by Rover, and a local station was sponsored and refurbished by Johnson's Wax.
