The Finacial Times reports (p1) on Chancellor Kenneth Clarke's warning to public sector workers yesterday to expect only 'very modest' increases for the next three years.

The chancellor said higher pay awards could only be financed by efficency savings. But more politically sensitive posts such as teachers and the Police might expect more than the predicted 1-2% ceiling on pay increases.
