The latest instalment of LGC’s conference barometer revealed the sector felt the hardest economic times were still to come. Our quarterly survey of senior managers, directors and chief executives found that only 11% of respondents believed the 2012-13 budget round would be less difficult than the current year’s.

A former Kent CC energy procurement officer faced charges of fraud involving more than £2m of unauthorised management fees, some of which he was alleged to have used to buy a Jaguar car. He was alleged to have committed the crimes while holding a senior post at Local Authority South East Region.

As major English cities fell victim to scenes of rioting, councils responded quickly, often working overnight to clear burned-out cars and debris-strewn streets. Questions still lingered about longer-lasting reputational damage and compensation from central government under the Riot Damages Act.
