Chief executive chosen in Bury

Bury MBC has selected an internal candidate and a “safe pair of hands” as its next chief executive.

Deputy chief executive Mike Kelly is to replace Mark Sanders when he retires next year, but the pair are to continue working together for several months as the council prepares its budget.

Mr Sanders said he had worked closely with Mr Kelly over a number of years.

“We have a close working relationship and I am confident that I will leave Bury in a safe pair of hands which will be able to capably manage the challenges which lie ahead to help ensure the best possible outcomes for the local community,” he said.

Mr Kelly, left, has previously worked for local authorities in Oldham, Sefton, Burnley and Middlesbrough, and joined Bury in 2002.

Thanking councillors for their unanimous backing of his appointment, he said: “I recognise that there are significant and difficult challenges which lie ahead.

“I will be working with the leader, cabinet and wider management team to make sure that this handover process is as smooth as possible and that we have continued stability as we work through these challenging times.”
