The leader of West Sussex CC Louise Goldsmith (Con) wants to work with other councils across the south-east in a bid to gain more devolved powers.
Cllr Goldsmith said she wanted to prepare a case for greater devolved powers to be given to the area’s county authorities after her council commissioned research into what benefits greater autonomy could bring.
She said there was “considerable work to do” to prepare a case for devolution but potential asks identified by the research included gaining a greater influence over rail infrastructure, longer-term infrastructure projects, and a more prominent role in social care, the troubled families agenda, and skills.
In a statement Cllr Goldsmith said: “To me, this work is about building a case to put to the government about how devolution could help resolve some of those really key issues around infrastructure and adult social care.”
