DIGEST: Public ballot over potential creation of largest town council in England

  • Comment

A referendum-style ‘yes or no’ question is to be put to the people of Sutton Coldfield in Birmingham to ask if they would like to create the largest town council in England.

A consultative ballot will run from 25 June to 16 July 2015.

Ken Browse (Ind), chair of the National Association of Local Councils, told LGC: “We are beginning to see an increasing trend of more urban communities looking to the first tier of local government to be the voices, representatives and service deliverers for them; such as in London, Birmingham, Leeds, York, and Milton Keynes. If the people of Sutton Coldfield does vote ‘yes’ then there should be an automatic right to have a town council there and this would be the largest one in England.”
