Good scrutiny shortlist named

A 21-strong shortlist has been named by the Centre for Public Scrutiny for its annual Good Scrutiny Awards.

They were chosen from among 80 entries by a judging panel chaired by Baroness Hamwee. Winners will be named on 2 June.

CfPS executive director Jessica Crowe said: “We were encouraged by the number of excellent entries this year, given the fundamental challenges many colleagues across the public sector and public scrutiny are experiencing.

“People are still carrying out a range of work of which they are proud of and that seeks to involve service users and communities to identify better value outcomes from public services.”

The shortlist is:

Community influence

  • Car parking charges, Blaby DC
  • Services for people with a learning disability, Devon CC
  • Access to healthier food, Our Life


  • Local adaptation for climate change, Brighton & Hove City Council
  • Community safety, Gloucestershire CC
  • Young people’s scrutiny panel, Westminster City Council

Joint working

  • Commuter parking, Basildon BC
  • Diabetes services, Norfolk CC
  • Health and well-being of the ex-service community, North East Health Scrutiny Joint Committee

Non-executive of the year

  • Cllr Carol Goodall (Lib Dem), scrutiny vice-chair - South Somerset DC
  • Cllr Alan White (Con), chair, corporate review scrutiny committee - Staffordshire CC
  • Cllr Randolph Conteh (Ind), chair, overview and scrutiny management committee - Stoke-on-Trent City Council

Raising the profile

  • Raising the profile of scrutiny through e-democracy, Bristol City Council
  • Scrutiny Commission on major events policing, Greater Manchester Police Authority
