Labour gained from Tories with a landslide victory in the latest council by-elections.
Candidate John Anderton won at Worksop North East in a contest at Nottinghamshire’s Bassetlaw DC, costing Conservatives their technical casting vote control of the authority.
The gain was expected as Labour easily won another ward seat in last May’s polls on the same day as the general election but the party recorded a 13.1% swing since then.
Labour increased its vote in Kent CC’s Romney Marsh division, coming from fourth place to second, but Tories’ share also rose, probably helped by a Ukip collapse.
At Lydd, Shepway DC, Labour was also the runner-up despite failing to fight last time.
