A spokesman for Essex police said: “A 70-year-old man from the Chelmsford area has been arrested for fraud as part of an investigation into expenses claims at Essex CC.
“He has been released on police bail until 18 January 2012 pending further inquiries.”
Sources were reported to have confirmed to the Press Association that it was the Conservative peer who had been arrested - five days after he was released having served a quarter of a nine-month sentence.
He had claimed £13,379 parliamentary expenses for overnight stays in London when he was not there.
