How can Solace build leadership capacity in the sector?

JM: There’s already some brilliant work being done in this area, led by Deborah Cadman and Becky Shaw, working with RSA and Collaborate. It’s shortly to pilot with a view to developing this for the sector. Central government are also interested in this, so watch this space! I’d also like to see a specific package for new chief execs as I remember my day one – if the truth be told it’s exhilarating and scary – and we can make a real offer of support here from across the Solace Group.

TH: When I first came to local government, I was amazed to find that despite having more senior officers than the armed forces (which I had just left), we had no local government academy or sector development programme. Equally, we seem to stumble at collaboration and prefer in the main to operate as autonomous business units.  So for me we need a coherent leadership development programme across our sector (with overlap to the civil service and private sector) and to collaborate more extensively and effectively to release capacity.
