Former Essex CC leader Lord Hanningfield (Con) was handed a nine-month prison sentence after being convicted of parliamentary expenses fraud.

Suffolk CC announced it would significantly cut senior salaries in the wake of Andrea Hill’s departure as chief executive.

Alace said its casework had doubled over the past year. A report from the organisation’s team of consultants said the rise had been “dramatic”.

Barnet LBC denied paying a security firm £1m to “snoop” on its own residents.

Separate studies of the LGPS by the GMB and the Chartered Institute of Fiscal Studies said council pensions were “affordable” and “in a sound position”.

Rob Whiteman’s appointment as chief executive of the UK Border Agency was announced, throwing open the race to succeed John Ransford as chief executive of the LGA. Mr Whiteman, then managing director of Local Government Improvement & Development, had been thought to be a leading contender for the role.
