Leader deselected over Hitler antics

  • Comment

Harrogate BC leader Mike Gardner (Con) has been deselected by his party after a picture was published on Facebook showing him dressed as Adolf Hitler.

This means he will be unable to defend his seat as a Conservative next May, after eight years as a councillor, but a council spokeswoman said he remained leader unless the full council decided otherwise.

The Daily Telegraph reports that Cllr Gardner had attended a party with a wartime fancy dress theme and had said he did not “dress up as a Nazi normally” and that the costume was “fancy dress and a piece of fun”.
