Merthyr announces chief exec

Merthyr Tydfil CBC’s deputy chief executive is to become the most senior official in the council, it has been announced.

Gareth Chapman will become chief executive on November 1, taking over from Alistair Neill who announced at the beginning of the summer that he had got the top job at Southampton City Council.

Mr Chapman, left, who has been at the authority since 2000, is currently executive director of schools, governance and technical services as well as deputy chief executive.

He has also been the council’s returning officer, monitoring officer an chief legal officer.

Merthyr’s leader, Jeff Edwards (Ind), said Mr Chapman had “impressed the panel with his 33 years experience in local government and has been an enormous asset to the Council since he joined in 2002”.
