Eaton warns of 100,000 job losses

Dame Margaret Eaton has warned the provisions in the spending review could lead to 100,000 council workers losing their jobs.

Speaking at conference on Thursday morning, the chairman of the Local Government Association said: “Our estimate is that up to 100,000 jobs in local authorities will go, that’s a tenth of the workforce.

“Of course, we all understand how desperately worrying this is for everyone,” she added. “Some will go through natural wastage and, of course, there will be voluntary redundancies. But there’s no doubt there will be job losses where people who were very dedicated won’t be there anymore.”
