Nick Eveleigh

Chelmsford City Council has named Nick Eveleigh as its new chief executive, succeeding Steve Packham, who died last October. Mr Eveleigh is a lifelong Chelmsford resident and began his career as an accountant at Essex CC. He joined Chelmsford in 2005 as director of financial services and has held that post since. “I am proud to be given the opportunity to lead Chelmsford City Council at such an exciting time,” Mr Eveleigh said. “This is a dynamic, outward-looking, growing city, but one that retains a great sense of community. Over the years, I have watched its evolution with pride.”

Andy Wright has been appointed chief executive of Braintree DC. He had held the role on an acting basis since the departure of Nicola Beach in June 2017. Mr Wright has worked for Braintree for five years as director of waste and recycling, health and wellbeing, building control, environmental protection, leisure and heritage services, community services, economic development and emergency planning. Leader Graham Butland (Con) said: “Andy has been an outstanding director for many years and over the last eight months has shown the strong and consistent leadership that will ensure the ambitious goals we have set ourselves can be achieved.”

Shetland Islands Council has appointed Maggie Sandison as its new chief executive. She has been the council’s director of infrastructure services since October 2013, having joined 2004 and held senior roles in environmental health and trading standards. Previous chief executive Mark Boden retired in January.

Rachael Wardell is to join Merton LBC in May as director of children, schools and families, when the current director Yvette Stanley becomes national director of social care at Ofsted. Ms Wardell is corporate director for communities at West Berkshire Council. She has previously been assistant director in Wokingham BC’s children’s services and early intervention and spent seven years at Ofsted responsible for early years and social care policy projects. Before that she worked for the Legal Aid Board.

Chris Ham cut out columnist

Chris Ham has announced he will leave the King’s Fund at the end of the year. Mr Ham took up his position as chief executive of the think tank eight years ago when he succeeded Niall Dickson. He had previously worked at the organisation between 1986 and 1992.
