Hartlepool BC is to get rid of its mayor and move to the committee system following a referendum held on Thursday.
The council will make the change next May when current mayor Stuart Drummond’s third term comes to an end.
Turnout for the referendum was 18% with 59% of voters supported the switch.
Mr Drummond was elected in 2002 when he ran in the first ever election for a directly elected mayor in Hartlepool.
At the time he ran he generally appeared in a monkey costume, the uniform for his job as a football mascot, however he has succesfully won two mayoral elections since then.
