Updated: Finance settlement expected on Thursday

The Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government hopes to be able to publish the finance settlement on Thursday, LGC understands.

There were concerns the outcome of the leadership challenge to prime minister Theresa May could have further delayed the settlement and pushed into next week. However, Ms May survived the confidence vote with 200 votes to 117.

The finance settlement had been due to be published on 6 December. However, that was delayed ahead of the planned ‘meaningful vote’ on Brexit. That vote was due to take place last night but it was deferred by Ms May on Monday.

There has been much anger and annoyance among senior figures within the sector about the delay to the finance settlement’s publication.

The latest a finance settlement has been delivered is 19 December. That happened last year (for the 2018-19 settlement) and in 2012 (for the 2013-14 settlement).

Parliament breaks up for Christmas on 20 December.

  • A week or two makes no difference, we are effectively in a third year of a settlement agreement so most councils know every much what they will get. I do think leading sector figures could give the sec of state and government a break at this difficult time for our country, rather than showboating to impress their own constituency
