  • Comment

The newly-created North of Tyne CA has appointed Norma Redfearn (Lab), mayor of North Tyneside Council, as its interim mayor.

Ms Redfearn will stand as the authority’s figurehead until its first mayoral election in May 2019.

A spokesperson for the CA said in a statement that candidates who intend to run for mayor must declare their candidacy before April 3.

There are currently four men who have nominated themselves to stand as Labour’s candidate for the position, including Nick Forbes, leader of Newcastle City Council, and Paul Brannen, North East MEP.
