Alok Sharma has been appointed as the new housing minister, it has been announced.
The MP for Reading West replaces Gavin Barwell, who has been appointed as prime minster Theresa May’s chief of staff after losing his Croydon Central seat at the general election.
Mr Sharma is a former Foreign Office minister and has served as a member of the Commons Treasury select committee.
He was also vice chairman of the Conservative party between 2012-2015 and has a professional background in banking.
Following the announcement this afternoon, communities secretary Sajid Javid tweeted his congratulations to his “friend”.
“Great to have him on board,” he added.
