Welsh council reorganisation mooted

Welsh local government minister Carl Sargeant has suggested that there will be reorganisation of councils in Wales, the Western Mail has reported.

Mr Sargeant is reported to have told Labour councillors at the Welsh Local Government Association conference that the 22 Welsh councils could be reorganised by 2016.

The minister has already told local authorities that they should look to share services and management teams when vacancies and opportunities arose, but reorganisation has not been mooted by the assembly government before.

However, he is said to have told councillors concerned about forthcoming boundary changes not to worry because the finding would be irrelevant because of new authorities to be created in the next six years.

A spokeswoman for the Welsh Assembly Government refused to confirm or deny the claims. “We do not comment on private meetings and hearsay,” she said.
