Reports: Mayor swears under breath at protesters

Lewisham LBC’s mayor Sir Steve Bullock (Lab) branded protesters “f****** idiots” and told them to get real when they complained about possible spending cuts, it has been reported.

Sir Steve said the comments, which were made during a town hall meeting, were an “aside”.

Local paper the News Shopper reported the mayor told the meeting he was not “over the moon” about the prospect of making cuts, but when a heckler challenged him not to carry them out he said: “Oh, get real.”

Following further protests, he was heard to mutter: “F****** idiots.”

Speaking after the meeting, Sir Steve told the local newspaper: “I think I may have left the mic on while I was making an aside.

“I don’t honestly know what planet they’re living on, which is probably why I was quite irritated.

“The idea that somehow we in Lewisham decide we won’t make any cuts while the rest of Britain is having its public services reduced by 25% is nonsense.”
