Former Local Government Association chair Sir Merrick Cockell has been appointed chair of the London Pensions Fund Authority.
Sir Merrick’s appointment comes after the LPFA announced a £10bn partnership with the Lancashire County Pension Fund, known as the Lancashire and London Pensions Partnership (LLPP).
In a statement Sir Merrick said: “It’s an exciting time to be leading LPFA as we are take the unprecedented step of pooling two of the largest pension funds in local government.”
LPFA chief executive Susan Martin said Sir Merrick would “continue to lead” discussions with Lancashire and “other local government funds and push for collaboration across the sector”.
Sir Merrick joined the LPFA board in October 2010 and he has been its deputy chair since January 2013.
The promotion is the latest appointment for Sir Merrick who was named chair of the Crossrail 2 Growth Commission last month.
He also became chair of the UK’s first municipal bonds agency in January.
