Andrea Sutcliffe’s replacement as the chief inspector of adult social care at the Care Quality Commission has been announced.

Debbie Westhead, who is currently CQC deputy chief inspector for adult social care for the north region and strategic lead for its enforcement work, is to take over on an interim basis from Ms Sutcliffe when she departs at the end of the year. A permanent appointment will then be made in due course.

Ms Westhead, who started her career as a care assistant, said she was “honoured and excited” to take on the role. She has worked in Ms Sutcliffe’s leadership team since 2014.

Ms Sutcliffe said: “Having worked with Debbie since I started at CQC I know how passionate and committed she is to improving adult social care services.”

CQC chief executive Ian Trenholm said: “I am really pleased that Debbie will be joining the board and executive team as interim chief inspector, ensuring continuity of leadership at this important time for adult social care.”
