Wealden DC’s chief executive has announced his retirement after 40 years in local government.

Charles Lant has been the council’s most senior officer for 16 years and has overseen projects such as a transformation programme which reduced running costs by £4m since 2010 and the building of 160 council homes.

Mr Lant said “the time is right to hand over the reins” as Wealden has “a great future ahead of it”.

Council leader Bob Standley (Con) paid tribute to Mr Lant. “His strong and effective management has helped us deliver considerable success for the council, the benefits of which will be felt by Wealden residents and businesses for many more years to come,” said Cllr Standley.

The council said it will be advertising the post shortly, with an expectation that a new chief executive will be in post ahead of the 2019 elections.
