Speaking at a meeting of full council today, Surrey leader David Hodge (Con) said he accepted Mr McNulty’s request to cancel his contract with “genuine personal disappointment”.
He added: “[Mr McNulty’s] strategic clarity of thinking has inspired so many right across our county and further afield.”
Clle Hodge praised Mr McNulty’s “inspired commitment to coaching colleagues”, which he said was “unparalleled across local government”.
He added that the search had begun for “the next dynamo to light the way ahead”.
Mr McNulty has been Surrey chief executive for eight years, having previously held the role at Trafford MBC.
