Islington to look for cheaper chief

Islington LBC will cut the chief executive’s salary by about £50,000 when John Foster stands down next May, the council’s leader has said.

Catherine West, who became the first Labour leader of the council in 10 years after the party’s victory in the May election, said she had decided as soon as she became leader that the current £210,000 salary should be reduced.

LGC discovered shortly after the election that Mr Foster would be leaving the council, and the authority’s spokesman later confirmed that Mr Foster would not be extending his three-year contract when it ended in May.

Cllr West said the council would also be managing its own recruitment process rather than paying for consultants.

“We’re not going to waste money employing expensive head hunters, we’ll be doing it in-house,” she told the Islington Tribune.

“All salaries are under review,” she added.
