Sandy Hopkins has been appointed chief executive of Southampton City Council, after her recommendation was unanimously ratified by full council today.

Ms Hopkins is currently chief executive at both Havant BC and East Hampshire DC and will take over from current interim chief executive Richard Crouch in the new year.

Council leader Christopher Hammond (Lab) said: “I am delighted that the council has agreed to appoint Sandy Hopkins as the next chief executive. She impressed us with her excellent track record, leadership experience, partnership approach, and ability to deliver innovative services.”

Ms Hopkins was appointed Havant chief in 2007 and took on a joint role at East Hampshire two years later. She is also chair of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight chief executives’ group and serves on the Local Government Association chief executive sounding board.

Meanwhile, Havant and East Hampshire executive director of operations and place shaping James Hassett has been appointed chief executive of the newly created West Somerset & Taunton Council.
