Millions of pounds of unpaid poll taxes are still outstanding in Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire, with Milton Keynes at the top of the list, according to BBC research, reports BBC Three Counties.

The BBC says more than£30 million is outstanding across the region. And many council taxpayers are having to pay an unofficial surcharge to help local authorities balance their books.

Community charge was abolished almost four years ago, but its legacy lingers on. Milton Keynes Borough Council is still owed more than£6 million in unpaid poll tax - the worst record in the region. Luton BC is owed more than£4 million and Bedford BC is just under£2 million out of pocket.

North Hertfordshire District Council has the best record in the county. It is owed£250,000.

More than£2 million of unpaid poll tax still has to be collected by six of the district councils in Northamptonshire, reports BBC Northampton.
