The mortality difference between the Cheshire town was as much as 12% in 1984, but it had fallen to 7% by last year.

A Warrington BC environmental health spokesman said the development of industrial chemicals, increased traffic volumes and use of domestic central heating systems posed a new threat of rising pollution levels.

'Health problems such as asthma are increasing where such pollutants are concentrated by settlement density'.
