Beaches and coasts are more litter strewn and polluted than they were last year, according to the Norwich Union Coastwatch survey published today, the Independent reports (p5).

The survey found an 'alarming decline' in coastal cleanliness, with almost half the coastline surveyed showing evidence of litter and pollution, varying in amount and type from region to region.

Kathy Pond of Coastwatch said: 'We have sent the report to the responsible local authorities. It is there job to sort it out'.
