PORTER FACES CALLS TO STRIP HER OF HONOUR

Labour MPs with links to Westminster City Council have tabled a Parliamentary early day motion calling for Dame Shirley Porter to be stripped of her damehood.

Former Labour group leader Andrew Dismore, former deputy group leader Peter Bradley and former councillor Karen Buck say Dame Shirley is not fit to hold the Dame of the British Empire honour because of her role in the homes for votes scandal.

The High Court last month branded Dame Shirley a liar whose efforts to target council house sales in key marginal Tory wards lost Westminster more than£27 million.

The motion says the House of Commons 'notes that Dame Shirley Porter was made a Dame of the British Empire in recognition of her services to local government but, in view of the court's judgment, considers that she is no longer a fit person to hold this honour; and calls upon the government to make representations to Her Majesty the Queen to remove from Dame Shirley Porter her DBE'.

The motion also attacks the Conservatives for failing to condemn or criticise Dame Shirley, despite assurances given by former prime minister John Major that he would unreservedly condemn her if she was found guilty in a court of law.
