Powys CC is attempting to reach a compromise with the local government boundary commission over plans to reduce the number of its elected representatives from 83 to 72.

The Western Mail (p9) reports that the council has campaigned against the changes, but that the strategy and resources committee has decided that it would rather negotiate for a revised cut of just five councillors than risk being left out of discussions.

Powys CC chief executive Neil Pringle told the paper: 'We maintain our wish to retain 83 councillors but have expressed a willingness to work on the proposals based on a council of 78 with an equal distribution between the three shires.'
