The Western Mail (p7) reports that Powys CC is seeking further legal and specialist advice on whether it can claim the royalty from the reclamation of Ystrad Fawr tips and adjoining land.

The demise of British Coal is providing local authorities with the chance to earn money through the extraction of coal from land they own, says the paper.

A Powys CC spokesman, John Williams, said the benefits for Powys would not only be financial.

'The proposed project would involve the extraction of coal from under Ystrad Fawr tips and the adjoining area, followed by the construction of a drift mine.

'This would create the benefit of both short-term and long-term well paid jobs in an area of high unemployment,' he said.
